What's Covered

An iron infusion delivers intravenous iron directly into the bloodstream via a slow drip, bypassing the gut. It is used for confirmed iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia when oral iron is insufficient, contraindicated or poorly tolerated. Your EGA doctor determines whether treatment is suitable and whether a 500mg, 1000mg or 1500mg dose is appropriate, based on your blood results, body weight and the degree of iron depletion.

01Why iron matters

Iron is central to oxygen transport. It is part of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in red blood cells, and myoglobin, which stores oxygen in muscle tissue. It is also essential for mitochondrial enzymes, DNA synthesis and immune cell function. Iron deficiency can be associated with fatigue, breathlessness on exertion, brain fog, cold hands and feet, pale skin, hair thinning or hair loss, reduced exercise tolerance, impaired immune function and restless legs syndrome.

02When oral iron is not enough

Oral iron commonly causes nausea, constipation, abdominal cramps and dark stools. Absorption can be reduced by gut inflammation, low stomach acid, coeliac disease, proton pump inhibitors and dietary factors such as tea, coffee, calcium and phytates. Restoring depleted iron stores through oral supplementation can take months. IV iron bypasses the gut and may be considered when oral treatment is insufficient, contraindicated or poorly tolerated.

03Recent blood test required

A recent blood test, ideally performed within the last 4 weeks, is required. Results must include a full blood count including haemoglobin, ferritin, serum iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation. Results from a GP, hospital or another accredited laboratory are accepted. Older results may no longer reflect your current iron status, and a repeat test may be needed. Your doctor may request additional markers where clinically relevant.

04EGA iron consultation required

Every iron infusion at EGA is preceded by a consultation with an EGA doctor, even if you have had IV iron elsewhere before. Your doctor reviews your blood results, symptoms and medical history, considers what may be causing your iron to be low, screens for contraindications and risk factors, confirms whether IV iron is appropriate, and calculates the dose. Treatment cannot be booked without this consultation.

05Why the cause matters

Iron deficiency can be associated with heavy periods, pregnancy, a diet low in iron, frequent blood donation or endurance training. It can also be a sign of hidden blood loss from the stomach or bowel, bowel or stomach cancer, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or side effects of long-term medicines. Your doctor will advise if further investigation or referral to your GP or a specialist is recommended.

06500mg, 1000mg or 1500mg

You do not choose your dose. Your doctor calculates it using your haemoglobin, ferritin, body weight and total iron deficit. A 500mg dose is typically appropriate for iron depletion without significant anaemia. A 1000mg dose is typically appropriate for established iron deficiency anaemia. A 1500mg dose is typically appropriate for a larger iron deficit, such as more marked anaemia or higher body weight where a greater replacement dose is clinically indicated.

Audience

Who It's For

Iron infusion is a medical treatment for confirmed iron deficiency. Suitability is assessed individually by an EGA doctor.

  • People with blood tests confirming iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia
  • People who cannot tolerate the gastrointestinal side effects of oral iron
  • People for whom oral iron has not sufficiently corrected the deficiency
  • People with coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease or achlorhydria affecting absorption
  • Women with heavy menstrual bleeding and recurrent iron depletion
  • Athletes, vegans, vegetarians and frequent blood donors with confirmed deficiency
  • People following bariatric surgery or gastrointestinal resection affecting absorption
  • People whose fatigue, brain fog, hair loss or reduced exercise tolerance is significantly affecting quality of life and who have confirmed iron deficiency

Treatment is not suitable when iron levels are normal or high, or where an iron overload condition is present. Iron infusions are not given in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Deliverable

Treatment, Monitoring and Possible Side Effects

The infusion usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on dose, followed by observation for at least 30 minutes. Please allow approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in total.

  • A cannula is placed in a vein in your arm, similar to a standard blood draw, and the infusion site is monitored throughout
  • Common and usually mild effects include headache, nausea, flushing, dizziness, a temporary metallic taste, blood pressure changes, cannula site discomfort, redness or bruising, and flu-like symptoms, muscle aches or joint aches in the 1 to 2 days after treatment
  • Low phosphate levels can occur and may occasionally cause tiredness or muscle weakness, especially after repeated doses. Your doctor may check phosphate at follow-up where appropriate
  • If iron leaks from the vein into surrounding tissue, it can cause brown skin discolouration that may be long-lasting. Report pain, swelling or burning at the drip site immediately
  • Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are rare. Treatment takes place with trained staff and emergency equipment, with monitoring throughout and observation for at least 30 minutes afterwards
  • After leaving the clinic, seek urgent medical help by calling 999 for a rash, swelling, difficulty breathing, chest pain or feeling faint, then let EGA know
  • A follow-up blood test approximately 4 to 6 weeks after infusion checks how well your iron stores have been replenished. Phosphate may also be checked where appropriate
  • Responses vary: some people notice an improvement in energy and symptoms within a few weeks. Full recovery of iron stores takes several weeks

Your doctor will discuss the potential benefits and risks with you and check for factors such as previous infusion reactions, significant allergies, asthma, eczema, active infection, liver problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Difference

The EGA Approach to Iron Infusion

At EGA, iron infusion is treated as a medical procedure rather than a wellness drip. Assessment, dosing, administration and follow-up are clinically led.

Diagnosis before treatment

Low iron is a finding, not a diagnosis. Your EGA doctor confirms whether you are genuinely iron deficient, considers why your iron is low and checks whether another type of anaemia, such as low vitamin B12 or folate, chronic inflammation, kidney disease or thalassaemia trait, may be present.

Individual risk screening

Your consultation checks previous reactions to IV iron or other medicines, significant allergies, asthma or eczema, active infection, liver problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and conditions such as haemochromatosis. Further investigation may be recommended before or alongside treatment.

Clinically calculated dosing

The correct dose, preparation and infusion rate are clinical decisions based on your individual blood results, body weight and total iron deficit. Too little may not correct the deficiency, while more than you need offers no benefit.

Supervised administration

Clinical staff monitor you during treatment and for at least 30 minutes afterwards. Trained staff and emergency equipment are available because serious allergic reactions, although rare, can occur.

05

Questions

Common Questions

Why do I need a consultation if I already have blood results?

Blood results can show that iron is low, but they do not explain why. Your EGA doctor interprets the results alongside your symptoms and history, considers possible causes, screens for risks and calculates your dose. The consultation is required before every EGA iron infusion, even if you have previously received IV iron elsewhere.

Can low iron be a sign of something serious?

In most people, low iron has a straightforward cause such as heavy periods or diet. Iron deficiency can sometimes be caused by hidden blood loss from the digestive tract, including bowel or stomach cancer, or by conditions such as coeliac disease. Your doctor will advise if further investigation is recommended.

What happens if my doctor thinks I need further tests?

Your doctor will explain why and advise on the appropriate next step, which may include further blood tests or referral to your GP or a specialist. In some cases, investigations may be recommended before or alongside iron treatment.

Can I use blood results from my GP or another clinic?

Yes. Results from a GP, hospital or accredited laboratory are accepted if they were taken within approximately one month and include a full blood count, ferritin and iron studies. Please send them before your consultation.

Can I book an iron infusion without a consultation?

No. Every client must first have an iron consultation with an EGA doctor. Treatment is offered only when the doctor confirms iron deficiency and considers IV iron suitable for you.

How much does an iron consultation and infusion cost?

Iron Consultation starts from £•••. Iron Consultation + Blood Test is £•••. Standard infusion prices are £••• for 500mg, £••• for 1000mg and £••• for 1500mg. Eligible clients completing the £••• consultation and blood test pathway at EGA may receive package prices of £•••, £••• or £••• respectively.

Why is package pricing only available with the blood test package?

Package pricing applies when EGA has completed the consultation, blood test and risk screening and an EGA doctor has confirmed suitability. It is not available with the consultation-only option.

Can I have my infusion on the same day as my consultation?

Your doctor needs to review your results and complete your assessment before an infusion can go ahead. Whether a same-day infusion is possible depends on your individual situation. Please call +44 (0) 20 8191 3012 to discuss.

Will I definitely be offered an iron infusion?

No. Treatment is offered only if your doctor confirms iron deficiency and considers IV iron suitable for you. Otherwise, you will be advised about alternatives or further investigation.

What are the possible side effects?

Possible mild effects include headache, nausea, flushing, dizziness, a metallic taste, temporary aches and changes in blood pressure. Less commonly, IV iron can lower phosphate or cause skin staining if iron leaks outside the vein. Serious allergic reactions are rare, which is why treatment and observation take place in a supervised clinical setting.

Is the infusion painful?

A cannula is placed in a vein, similar to a blood draw. You may feel mild warmth. Tell your practitioner immediately if you notice pain, burning or swelling at the infusion site.

How long does the appointment take?

The infusion usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, followed by at least 30 minutes of observation. Please allow approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in total.

How quickly will I feel better?

Responses vary: some people notice an improvement in energy and symptoms within a few weeks, as red blood cell production increases and haemoglobin rises. Full recovery of iron stores takes several weeks. A follow-up blood test 4 to 6 weeks after infusion checks how well your iron stores have been replenished.

Can I have an iron infusion if I am pregnant?

IV iron is not given in the first trimester. It may be used clinically in the second or third trimester when oral iron is inadequate, following individual medical assessment. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Will I need more than one treatment?

Possibly. This depends on the size of your iron deficit and whether the underlying cause is ongoing, such as heavy periods, a chronic gut condition or dietary insufficiency. Your doctor will advise on monitoring and maintenance.

How is this different from an iron drip at a wellness clinic?

At EGA, iron infusion is a medical procedure requiring recent blood results, an EGA doctor consultation, an individually calculated dose and monitoring during and after treatment. It is intravenous iron replacement therapy delivered under clinical protocols, not a nutrient wellness drip.
