Before Iron Treatment,the Right Diagnosis.
Low iron is a finding, not a diagnosis. Before any treatment begins, an iron consultation with an EGA doctor confirms whether you truly need iron, looks for the reason your iron is low, and checks whether IV iron is suitable for you.

What's Covered
An iron consultation is a dedicated appointment with an EGA doctor to assess your iron status and decide whether an iron infusion is right for you. Your doctor reviews your blood results, symptoms and medical history, considers what may be causing your iron to be low, screens for anything that would make an infusion unsafe, and, if treatment is appropriate, calculates the correct dose. At EGA, an iron consultation is required before every iron infusion. This applies even if you have had IV iron elsewhere before, and even if you already have blood results. IV iron can be an effective treatment for confirmed iron deficiency, but it treats the deficiency, not its cause. Treating low iron without understanding why it is low, or without confirming that it is low at all, can put your health at risk. Your consultation is designed to reduce the risks below.
011. Missing the underlying cause of iron deficiency
Iron deficiency always has a reason. In many people the cause is straightforward: heavy periods, pregnancy, a diet low in iron, frequent blood donation, or endurance training. But iron deficiency can also be the first sign of a condition that needs investigation in its own right, including slow, hidden blood loss from the stomach or bowel (for example from ulcers, inflammation or polyps); bowel cancer or stomach cancer, which can cause gradual blood loss long before any other symptoms appear; coeliac disease and other gut conditions that stop iron being absorbed; inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis); and side effects of long-term medicines, such as anti-inflammatory painkillers or blood thinners. This is why UK clinical guidelines recommend that unexplained iron deficiency anaemia, particularly in men of any age and in women after the menopause, is investigated for a cause in the digestive tract, including bowel cancer (NICE guideline NG12; British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines, 2021). An iron infusion may improve your symptoms and your blood results. If the cause has not been looked for, that improvement can mask a serious condition and delay its diagnosis. Your EGA doctor will ask about your symptoms, diet, menstrual history, bowel habits, medicines and family history, and will advise you if further investigation is recommended, including referral to your GP or a specialist where appropriate.
022. Giving iron to someone who does not need it
Fatigue, hair loss and low energy have many causes, and not all of them are iron. Iron that the body does not need cannot easily be removed, and excess iron can build up in organs such as the liver and heart. Your consultation confirms from your blood results that you are genuinely iron deficient before any iron is given, and identifies conditions in which extra iron is harmful, such as haemochromatosis (inherited iron overload).
033. Treating the wrong kind of anaemia
Not all anaemia is caused by low iron. Low vitamin B12 or folate, chronic inflammation, kidney disease and inherited conditions such as thalassaemia trait can all cause anaemia, and an iron infusion will not correct them. Your doctor will interpret your full blood count and iron studies together to make sure iron is the right treatment.
044. Infusion safety risks
IV iron is well tolerated by many people, but some factors increase the risk of side effects, including serious allergic reactions. Your doctor will check for previous reactions to IV iron or other medicines, significant allergies, asthma or eczema, active infection, liver problems, and pregnancy or breastfeeding. Iron infusions are not given in the first trimester of pregnancy.
055. The wrong dose
The right dose of iron (500mg, 1000mg or 1500mg) depends on your haemoglobin, ferritin and body weight. Too little may not correct your deficiency; more than you need offers no benefit. Your dose is always decided by your EGA doctor.
06Required before an infusion: a recent blood test
We need blood results that include a full blood count (including haemoglobin), ferritin, and iron studies: serum iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation. Your blood test does not need to be done at EGA. Results from your GP, a hospital or another accredited laboratory are accepted, but they must be recent, taken within approximately one month of your consultation. Older results may no longer reflect your current iron status, and a repeat test will be needed. Your doctor may request additional tests where clinically relevant. If you do not have recent results, choose our Iron Consultation + Blood Test package and we will arrange everything at EGA.
07Required before an infusion: an iron consultation with an EGA doctor
Your consultation is where your results are reviewed, the cause of your deficiency is considered, risks are screened and your dose is decided. An iron infusion cannot be booked without it.
08What to have ready
Your blood test results (if you are not testing with us); a list of the medicines and supplements you take, including any iron tablets; details of any previous iron treatment and how you responded; any previous allergic reactions to medicines or infusions; any relevant medical history, including gut conditions, surgery or previous investigations such as endoscopy or colonoscopy; and whether you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Questions
Common Questions
Why do I need a consultation if I already have blood results?
Blood results show that your iron is low. They do not show why. Your consultation is where your doctor interprets your results in the context of your symptoms and history, looks for the cause of your deficiency, screens for safety risks and decides on your dose. It is required before every iron infusion at EGA.
Can low iron be a sign of something serious?
In many people, low iron has a straightforward cause such as heavy periods or diet. But iron deficiency can sometimes be caused by hidden blood loss from the digestive tract, including from bowel or stomach cancer, or by conditions such as coeliac disease. This is why understanding the cause matters, and why your doctor will advise you if further investigation is recommended.
What happens if my doctor thinks I need further tests?
Your doctor will explain why, and will advise on the appropriate next step, which may include further blood tests or referral to your GP or a specialist. In some cases, your doctor may recommend completing investigations before or alongside iron treatment.
Can I use blood results from my GP or another clinic?
Yes, as long as they were taken within approximately the last month and include a full blood count, ferritin and iron studies. Please send them to us before your appointment.
How much does an iron consultation cost?
The Iron Consultation starts from £•••. The Iron Consultation + Blood Test package is £•••.
Why is package pricing only available with the blood test package?
Package pricing applies when EGA has carried out your full assessment (consultation, blood test and risk screening) and confirmed that you are suitable for treatment. It is not available with the consultation-only option.
Can I have my infusion on the same day as my consultation?
Your doctor needs to review your results and complete your assessment before an infusion can go ahead. Whether a same-day infusion is possible depends on your individual situation. Please call us on +44 (0) 20 8191 3012 to discuss.
Will I definitely be offered an iron infusion?
No. An infusion is only offered if your doctor confirms that you are iron deficient and that IV iron is suitable for you. If it is not, your doctor will advise on alternatives, such as oral iron or further investigation.
